Arbeloa demands strong action from UEFA against racism
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has urged UEFA to take severe measures against the alleged racist and homophobic insults directed at Brazilian player Vinícius Júnior by Gianluca Prestianni, a Benfica footballer. In a press conference prior to the next European match, Arbeloa emphasized the need for UEFA to demonstrate that its commitment against racism goes beyond symbolic statements, translating into concrete actions.Arbeloa firmly defended Vinícius Júnior, highlighting his performance and leadership within the team. He stated that the player is motivated and in optimal condition for the next match. On the other hand, the coach preferred not to comment on the recent statements made by the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta. Arbeloa did mention that the “Negreira case” continues to be the most worrying issue in Spanish football. Arbeloa’s statement comes at a time of growing attention on protocols and sanctions against racism in European football, pending a possible disciplinary decision by UEFA.No action on the field of play justifies racism.
