Matías Almeyda sacked as Sevilla coach

Argentinian Matías Almeyda was dismissed this Monday as Sevilla’s coach, as announced by the club through a statement. The decision comes after the team’s defeat against Valencia (0-2), which leaves Sevilla only three points away from the relegation zone. Almeyda coached the team in 32 official matches, including 29 matches in LaLiga EA Sports and 3 in the Copa del Rey. The coach arrived at the club last summer, and his departure comes with the team in a delicate position, sixteenth with 31 points. The team’s performance has been irregular, with 8 wins, 7 draws and 14 losses, and a negative image, especially in the matches played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium.

Sevilla FC wishes to thank the work of Matías Almeyda and his team in these months and wishes him the best of luck in his next professional challenges.

Official statement from Sevilla FC
The club is now in negotiations to find a replacement for Almeyda. Luis García Plaza is one of the names that sounds the most, although other candidates such as Manolo Jiménez or Diego Martínez, both with a past in the club, are also mentioned. Almeyda, 52 years old, had signed a three-year contract, until June 2028, with the aim of revitalizing the team and recovering the level it had in the past. Under Almeyda’s management, Sevilla has accumulated 31 points, with 16 points earned at home and 15 away. In addition, the team is the most scored against in the First Division, with 49 goals conceded.
