Alcaraz Close to Securing World Number 1 at Year End

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz is in a privileged position to finish the year as number one in the world, thanks to the recent withdrawal of Italian Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters 1,000.

Alcaraz, current number one in the ATP ranking, now has a considerable advantage in the race for the top spot.

To secure this achievement, the Murcian player would only need to reach the final in the Paris-Bercy tournament, even if Sinner were to win the remaining three tournaments on the circuit.

The young Spanish tennis player, after winning the ATP 500 in Tokyo, decided not to participate in the Chinese tournament to rest due to an injury to his left ankle.

Sinner, for his part, was looking to defend his title in Shanghai, but his early elimination in the second round prevented him from adding more points.

The Italian suffered a defeat against Tallon Griekspoor, which cost him the opportunity to gain important points.

This situation leaves Sinner with 10,000 points in the ATP ranking, while Alcaraz accumulates 11,340, despite losing 200 points for not playing in China.

Alcaraz will defend 300 points in the upcoming tournaments, while Sinner will have to defend 1,500 points obtained in 2024.

Sinner will also participate in the ATP 500 in Vienna, where he could add more points.

Calculating, Alcaraz would only need to reach the final in Paris to secure the number 1 at the end of the year, or even be a semifinalist and win at least one match in the ATP Finals.

With the final in Paris, Alcaraz would reach 11,690 points, while with the semi-final and a match won at the ATP Finals, he would add at least 11,640. Sinner’s maximum potential for this year is 11,500.
