SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORÍS – President Luis Abinader has enacted Law number 69-25, an initiative by the senator for Duarte province, Franklin Romero. This law establishes September 23 of each year as the “National Baseball Player Day”, a tribute to Osvaldo Virgil. The enactment, carried out on July 31, 2025, by the Head of State, orders its publication in the Official Gazette for compliance. Senator Franklin Romero expressed his satisfaction upon learning of the decision, highlighting the justice done to Osvaldo Virgil’s achievements in baseball.
Romero highlighted the significance of Osvaldo Virgil, emphasizing the economic benefits and the growth of the sport in the country derived from his career in the Major Leagues. In addition, he recalled Law 7-22, also of his authorship, which named the La Normal stadium in honor of the former baseball player. Osvaldo José Virgil Pichardo, known as Ozzie Virgil, was born on May 17, 1932, in Montecristi. He was a Dominican utility player who competed in Major League Baseball between 1956 and 1969, playing for the New York Giants, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and San Francisco Giants. Although he excelled at third base, Virgil demonstrated versatility by playing in various positions, except pitcher and center fielder. After his playing career, Ozzie Virgil served as a coach for 19 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners. He worked as a third base coach alongside Hall of Famer Dick Williams. Virgil passed away on September 29, 2024, at the age of 92.The 23rd of September of each year will be days of celebration, to remember a legend of the king sport in the Dominican Republic, as is Mr. Osvaldo Virgil, who opened the doors to the immense Dominican talent in Major League Baseball.
