Clarke Schmidt returns to the Yankees after completing a long recovery
The New York Yankees have made official the long-awaited return of right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt, who was officially activated from the injured list. The pitcher ends an absence of more than 14 months, a period during which he underwent a rigorous rehabilitation process following Tommy John surgery.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Schmidt’s return, the organization made the difficult decision to designate Venezuelan player Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment.

With a career spanning six seasons wearing the Bronx Bombers uniform, Schmidt has accumulated a 23-24 record and a career ERA of 3.82. Before his injury in July 2025, the right-hander was showing a solid performance with a 4-4 record and a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts.
The coaching staff, led by Aaron Boone, has a clear strategy for his integration:
- The pitcher will initially be used out of the bullpen.
- His workload will be constantly monitored to avoid setbacks.
- He will not be strictly limited to single innings, as the goal is to progressively regain his strength.
“I think he’s throwing the ball well. He’s had a very good month and we feel he’s ready to help us,” Boone stated regarding the pitcher’s current status.

Oswaldo Cabrera’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the 27-year-old Venezuelan, who had established himself as a utility piece within the team. After facing an ankle fracture in May 2025 and a period of activity in Triple-A, the player is now seeking new professional opportunities.
