Escalation of violence in Guatemala: Two youths found dead in the capital
Insecurity in Guatemala adds a new tragic chapter. This Tuesday, the bodies of two young people, aged 18 and 19, were located in the south of the Guatemalan capital. The victims showed clear signs of violence and were found wrapped in plastic bags, a method that has raised alarms among local authorities.
The discovery was reported by the Volunteer Firefighters, who arrived at the scene after receiving a citizen alert. Following the intervention of the National Civil Police, the relatives confirmed the identity of the deceased, who had been reported missing a day earlier, after being intercepted at some nearby soccer fields.
A worrying increase in crime
Official figures reflect an alarming landscape in terms of security. So far in 2026, more than 90 findings of people whose bodies were abandoned on public roads under similar conditions have been recorded. This data marks a significant contrast with the 39 cases registered during all of 2025.
Guatemalan authorities have recognized the need to restructure security strategies in light of the recent surge in violence, which includes mass incidents that have left multiple fatalities in a single weekend.
Factors behind the crisis
Security specialists point out that the wave of violence sweeping the country has its roots in three main axes:
- The presence and operation of gangs.
- Activities linked to drug trafficking.
- The increase in common crime.
Although official records indicate a 10% reduction in total murders between January and June 2026, when comparing the 1,437 deaths reported against the 1,600 from the same period the previous year, the situation remains critical. To this balance, the 312 violent deaths confirmed during the month of July must be added, which keeps the country in a state of constant alert.
