Alert in China: Typhoon Saudel approaches the eastern coast after a season of heavy rains
China remains on high alert for the imminent arrival of Typhoon Saudel, which is moving toward the country’s eastern coast. This meteorological phenomenon coincides with the persistent effects of the Narra system, which has left heavy rainfall in its wake in the south and southwest, worsening the situation following the severe flooding that forced the evacuation of more than 54,000 people in the Guangxi region.
According to the National Meteorological Center, Saudel was located in the East China Sea, about 485 kilometers from the border between Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. With winds reaching 40 meters per second near its core, the system, which has recently lost strength, maintains a west-southwest trajectory with a possible landfall between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Impact on transport and preventive measures
Meteorological authorities have warned about the danger of strong winds that will affect key areas, including the Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, and the coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian. Given this scenario, the air transport sector has begun to take precautions:
- Ningbo Airport has confirmed the suspension of its operations starting at 23:30 local time.
- Although the airports in Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Fuzhou are operating normally, dozens of preventive cancellations have been recorded at the Ningbo and Wenzhou terminals.
Specialists have pointed out that the combination of multiple tropical systems considerably increases the risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in regions that have already been affected by previous rainfall.
This climate event adds to a particularly complex summer for the Asian giant, marked by a succession of typhoons and torrential rains that have left a significant toll of material damage, mass evacuations, and human losses. Authorities continue to monitor the progress of Saudel to mitigate the impacts in the most vulnerable areas.
