Donald Trump does not rule out a meeting with Iran at the UN General Assembly

United States President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of holding a meeting with representatives of Iran within the framework of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place this week in New York. Washington’s main objective is to advance a resolution to the regional conflict and ensure that the Iranian regime does not develop nuclear weapons.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that, although there is no formal agenda for a bilateral meeting between Trump and Iranian delegates, the U.S. Administration remains willing to consider an approach if it allows for concrete and tangible diplomatic results.

A key diplomatic scenario

The presence of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York to participate in UN sessions coincides with Trump’s stay in the city, where he is scheduled to address the plenary this Tuesday. This geographical coincidence places both governments in the same space, which has historically served as a catalyst for high-level diplomatic contacts.

The U.S. Administration maintains that the primary objective continues to be preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and seeking a solution that allows for an end to the conflict. To that end, the possibility of establishing talks during the General Assembly remains on the table.

The context of the conflict in the Middle East

Tension in the region has escalated significantly since the start of military operations on February 28th. Since then, the conflict has impacted various spheres, including global energy security:

  • Military escalation: Exchanges of missile and drone attacks affecting Israel and U.S. bases in countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Qatar.
  • Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s actions in this strategic route have generated instability in maritime transport and concern over oil supply.
  • Economic impact: The rise in gasoline prices represents an internal challenge for the Trump administration, with significant political implications ahead of the upcoming electoral processes.

As the international community watches closely, uncertainty surrounds the possibility of direct negotiation. Although the Iranian delegation faced logistical difficulties with visa approvals to reach New York, their participation in the General Assembly keeps alive the expectation of a possible dialogue that could defuse the current crisis.
