Donald Trump points to Mexico at the UN over the cartel crisis

During his recent address to the United Nations General Assembly, United States President Donald Trump issued a stern warning regarding the security situation in Mexico. The president described the neighboring country as the epicenter of violence generated by drug trafficking groups and demanded decisive intervention to regain control of areas under criminal influence.

Trump emphasized his concern regarding security along the extensive shared border, which exceeds 3,200 kilometers. According to the American leader, it is an unacceptable situation that a large part of the territory is operated by organizations he termed as enemies of humanity.

Mexico must regain control of its territory from the enemies of humanity.

Cooperation and sovereignty: points of friction

Despite the harshness of his statements, President Trump acknowledged that he maintains a constructive relationship with the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum. He highlighted that there is significant progress in terms of security and assured that the Mexican government shares the interest of eradicating the cartels, which, in his view, would benefit the stability of the entire region.

However, the bilateral relationship remains marked by a fundamental difference: the methodology for combating organized crime. While Washington pushes to intensify actions, there is a latent debate regarding the possibility of direct operations by U.S. forces on Mexican soil.

  • Mexico’s position: President Claudia Sheinbaum has been emphatic in defending national sovereignty, rejecting any foreign military or police incursion that acts unilaterally.
  • Bilateral approach: Both countries maintain active cooperation mechanisms to manage critical issues such as migration, arms trafficking, and the fight against drug trafficking.
  • Common goal: Despite discrepancies regarding the scope of intervention, both nations agree that reducing the power of cartels is a strategic priority for hemispheric security.

Trump’s intervention at the UN once again places the issue of border security at the epicenter of the international agenda. The challenge for both governments will be to find a balance that allows for an effective fight against organized crime, while simultaneously respecting the sovereignty and legal frameworks of each nation.
