Trough intensifies rainfall across the national territory: 16 provinces under alert

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has issued a forecast of unstable weather conditions for this Sunday. Due to the incidence of a trough that brings abundant moisture and conditions favorable for the formation of clouds with significant vertical development, moderate to heavy downpours are expected, accompanied by thunderstorms, wind gusts, and the possibility of hail in various parts of the country.

Rainfall will be more intense during the afternoon, concentrating mainly in the northern and northeastern regions, the eastern plains, as well as in the Central Mountain Range and the border area. Among the provinces that will be most affected by this atmospheric phenomenon are Santiago, Samaná, La Romana, María Trinidad Sánchez, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, San Juan, Monseñor Nouel, Hermanas Mirabal, Santiago Rodríguez, and La Vega.

Flood risk alert and warning levels

Given the soil saturation and the latent risk of urban flooding, as well as flash floods in rivers, streams, and creeks, the agency has adjusted its alert levels to safeguard the population. A total of 16 provinces remain under constant surveillance.

  • Provinces on alert: Greater Santo Domingo (especially the northern area), San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Elías Piña, and Puerto Plata.
  • Provinces under advisory: Sánchez Ramírez, San Pedro de Macorís, Hato Mayor, San Juan, Duarte, Santiago, La Vega, and Espaillat.

Weather conditions in Greater Santo Domingo

For Greater Santo Domingo, a mostly cloudy environment is expected throughout the day. In the National District, morning showers are expected, which will evolve into scattered downpours with thunderstorms during the afternoon. Similar conditions will occur in Santo Domingo Norte and Santo Domingo Este.

For its part, Santo Domingo Oeste will experience the most marked effects of the trough, with a forecast of heavy downpours, wind gusts, and electrical activity during the afternoon hours. Despite the rains, the environment will remain hot, with maximum temperatures ranging between 31 °C and 33 °C, while minimums will remain between 23 °C and 25 °C.

Authorities recommend that citizens stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions against possible river flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
