Intense counter-terrorism investigation in the UK following incident at air base
The UK Counter-Terrorism Police have intensified their operations following the recent incident recorded in the vicinity of the RAF Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire. This Thursday, authorities confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man, holding dual British and Iranian nationality, on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2006. The arrest took place in the Westminster district, London, where searches were also carried out at two properties related to the investigation.
Alongside the detainee, a second individual, 26 years old and of British origin, was questioned by the authorities. The national coordinator of the counter-terrorism unit, Vicki Evans, described the case as an extremely complex task, noting that investigators are exploring various hypotheses, including the possible involvement of a foreign state in these events.
The investigation is very complex and we are analyzing multiple lines, including the possible involvement of a foreign state in what happened near the air base.
Vicki Evans, National Coordinator for Counterterrorism Policing
The origin of the incident
The alert was triggered in the early hours of last Sunday, September 27, when police received reports of three suspicious vans driving toward the base, accompanied by a group of hooded individuals. Although no explosive devices were found in the vehicles, a considerable amount of fuel was seized. Previously, five men between the ages of 23 and 25 had been arrested for crimes related to explosives, although they are currently released on bail with movement restrictions.
Diplomatic tensions and the role of RAF Fairford
The scene of the events, RAF Fairford, is a top-tier strategic facility, being the main United States bomber base in Europe, capable of housing B-1, B-2, and B-52 aircraft. The geopolitical relevance of this location has sparked an exchange of statements between London and Tehran.
- Political accusations: British officials have pointed to evidence of possible Iranian involvement, a stance that has been categorically rejected by the Iranian embassy in London.
- War context: The conflict involving Washington, Israel, and Iran has placed British bases under constant scrutiny, following the authorization of their use for defensive missions.
- Background: British authorities have previously dismantled foreign intelligence networks linked to Tehran that were operating within the country.
Despite the gravity of the event, no formal charges have been filed against those detained so far. The progress of the investigations over the coming days will be decisive in clarifying whether the incident will remain within the criminal sphere or if it will escalate into a major diplomatic crisis amidst the ongoing regional conflict.
