Tragedy in Indonesia: Devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake shakes the island of Flores
The island of Flores, in Indonesia, is going through moments of deep anguish after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded this Saturday morning. The seismic phenomenon, which had its epicenter 162 kilometers northeast of Labuan Bajo, has left a preliminary toll of 38 fatalities and has caused the evacuation of approximately 2,000 people to safe areas.
The seismic movement, with a depth of 10 kilometers, surprised residents around 6:00 in the morning, local time. Testimonies from the affected area describe scenes of chaos and destruction. Santiago Tinoco, a Spanish citizen residing in Labuan Bajo, recounted the moments of terror experienced during the 15 to 20 seconds that the earthquake lasted.
Everything started to shake, the walls cracked and pieces of the ceiling fell on our heads. The staircase was breaking and we felt like the building was going to collapse.

Tsunami alert and response from the authorities
Following the seismic event, local authorities immediately activated a tsunami alert, which generated collective panic in coastal communities. Although the alert was deactivated hours later, waves of up to one meter in height were reported, forcing citizens to move to elevated areas to safeguard their lives.
In cities like Maumere, the closest to the epicenter, the emotional impact has been significant. Many inhabitants relived the trauma of the devastating 1992 earthquake, which also reached a magnitude of 7.7 and left an indelible mark on the collective memory of the region due to its subsequent tsunami.
A highly vulnerable region

- The convergence of various tectonic plates in this zone makes the archipelago, composed of more than 17,000 islands, a territory prone to suffering high-magnitude earthquakes.
