Senate approves bill to promote youth internships in public institutions
The Senate of the Republic took a significant step toward the professionalization of Dominican youth by approving, in a second reading, a bill that establishes a national internship program. This initiative, promoted by Senator Gustavo Lara, has as its main objective to bridge the gap between academic training and the reality of the labor market.
A boost for young professionals
The proposal is designed to benefit students of technical and university degree programs aged between 18 and 35. The program seeks to enable these young people to integrate into various public sector institutions, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work environments.
Among the entities that would be part of this program are:
- Government institutions
- Constitutional bodies
- Decentralized entities
- City councils and organizations that manage public funds
The fundamental purpose is to provide students with practical tools, facilitating their entry into the labor market and overcoming the common obstacle of a lack of prior experience when seeking their first job.
Next legislative steps
Although the piece has successfully passed its procedure in the Senate, the process is not yet concluded. The bill must be sent to the Chamber of Deputies, where it must be studied and subjected to the corresponding legislative procedure for its possible approval.
Once this cycle is completed, the document would be sent to the Executive Branch for promulgation by President Luis Abinader. If it becomes law, the country will have a solid legal framework that will facilitate the professional development of young Dominicans, while simultaneously strengthening management in state institutions through emerging talent.
