Weather conditions in the Dominican Republic: Saharan dust and high pressure dictate the forecast
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has reported that atmospheric conditions across much of the national territory will be dominated this Friday by the influence of a high-pressure system. This phenomenon, combined with the presence of Saharan dust particles, will act as a limiting factor for the occurrence of significant rainfall in most of the country.
Despite this stable outlook, the meteorological agency warns that, throughout the afternoon, the drift of cloud fields driven by the east/southeast wind, combined with the day’s typical heating, could generate some local downpours. These rains, which could include isolated thunderstorms, would be concentrated mainly in provinces such as Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, and specific areas of Santiago, occasionally extending into the early hours of the night.
Forecast for Greater Santo Domingo
For Greater Santo Domingo, varied weather behavior is expected. While scattered cloudiness will prevail in the National District and Santo Domingo Oeste, the sky will remain partly cloudy in the sectors of Santo Domingo Norte and Santo Domingo Este. Regarding thermal values, it is estimated that minimum temperatures will range between 24 °C and 26 °C, while maximums will reach records between 33 °C and 35 °C.
Monitoring cyclonic activity
Regarding the hurricane season, Indomet is keeping two systems under surveillance that currently pose no risk to the Dominican Republic:
- Tropical Storm Fay: It is located about 1,715 kilometers west/southwest of the Azores. It has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and is moving westward at a speed of 9 km/h.
- Tropical Storm Gonzalo: Located approximately 220 kilometers south of the Cape Verde Islands, it has maximum winds of 75 km/h and maintains a movement toward the north/northwest at 15 km/h.
Due to their geographical position and current trajectory, both atmospheric phenomena remain far from our forecast area, so they do not represent any danger to the national territory.

In summary, the day will remain under the effects of atmospheric stability, with Saharan dust as the main protagonist, allowing only isolated local showers towards the end of the day.
