Pope sends humanitarian aid after devastating floods in Nepal
In a gesture of international solidarity, the Vatican has confirmed the sending of direct financial aid to the Caritas organization in Nepal. This contribution seeks to provide immediate relief to the communities affected by the catastrophic floods that struck the region last Wednesday, leaving a desolate landscape and an unfolding humanitarian crisis.
Although the specific amount of the papal donation has not been disclosed, it has been specified that the funds will be managed for the urgent acquisition of food, basic necessities, and the setting up of shelters for the thousands of people who have lost their homes due to the natural disaster.
A tragic toll that continues to rise
The situation in the Bhote Koshi river basin is critical. According to the most recent reports, local authorities have recovered 669 bodies in Nepalese territory, a figure that, when added to the victims registered in Tibet, brings the total number of deaths to 676 people.
The scale of the tragedy remains at alarming levels, with nearly 3,000 citizens reported missing on both sides of the border. Rescue and search efforts continue under extremely difficult conditions as attempts are made to locate survivors.
Global solidarity is fundamental in these moments of distress for the Nepalese people, where the priority remains safeguarding lives and providing shelter to the displaced.
International relief efforts
In addition to the Vatican’s intervention, other organizations have begun to mobilize resources to support the recovery of the area. The Italian Episcopal Conference has allocated 500,000 euros, obtained through voluntary donations from its faithful, to strengthen assistance efforts on the ground.
