Financial strengthening: More than 98 SNS hospitals operate debt-free

The public health system in the Dominican Republic is experiencing a moment of historic transformation. According to statements by Dr. Julio Landrón, director of the National Health Service (SNS), the national hospital network has managed to consolidate unprecedented financial stability, allowing 98 medical centers to currently operate with zero debt and have the necessary resources in the Single Treasury Account to ensure uninterrupted care for the citizenry.

Efficient management and record results

During the assessment corresponding to the first seven months of 2026, authorities highlighted that public hospitals have left behind the image of administrative inefficiency. Dr. Landrón emphasized that the current management has focused on transparency and the responsible handling of public funds, making health centers self-sustainable entities today.

The country’s public hospitals have ceased to be bottomless pits to become health centers with greater financial stability, and this is demonstrated by the data from each of the establishments settled in the Single Account.

Reduction of historical liabilities and projections

At the beginning of the current government administration in 2020, the Public Health Network faced an accumulated debt of over RD$4.8 billion. Thanks to an administration based on efficiency, this amount has been reduced by more than RD$1.7 billion. Looking to the future, the SNS projects that by 2027, hospital debt will have decreased by more than 70% compared to the figures received upon taking office.

  • More than 2.5 million new affiliates to the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa) have boosted the network’s financial flow.
  • The remaining 100 hospitals with pending commitments are in the process of being cleared, with the goal that half will manage to settle their debts before next January.
  • Care capacity has soared, recording more than 29 million medical assists between January and July 2026.

Response to criticism from the medical sector

In response to the questions raised by sectors of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), Landrón extended an invitation to health professionals to personally visit the hospital centers. The official regretted that certain union members maintain an outdated view of the hospital reality, ignoring the tangible improvements in infrastructure, modern equipment, and the economic stability that today defines the public health system in Alofoke Deportes.
