Heart-stopping day in LIDOM: Key wins for Toros, Águilas, and Licey
The Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) season continues to offer intense excitement. The most recent Sunday round was marked by an offensive display from the Toros del Este, the first victory for the Águilas Cibaeñas, and a dramatic outcome in extra innings starring the Tigres del Licey.
Toros del Este impose their power in San Pedro
At Tetelo Vargas Stadium, the Toros del Este achieved an important 6-4 victory over the Estrellas Orientales. The clash was defined in an explosive second inning where the team from La Romana produced five runs, highlighted by home runs from Julio E. Rodríguez and Francisco Urbáez against starting pitcher Enny Romero.
Although the Estrellas tried to close the gap on the scoreboard thanks to RBIs from Harold Ramírez and Josh Lester, the Toros’ bullpen held firm. Ángel Felipe was a key piece in neutralizing a threat in the sixth inning, striking out three consecutive batters. With this result, the Toros tie the Estrellas in the standings with a 2-1 record.
The Águilas Cibaeñas secure their first win
Cibao Stadium witnessed the first victory of the Águilas Cibaeñas in the current season, defeating the Gigantes del Cibao 4-1. Although the visitors took an early lead with a home run by Jake Holton, the Aguilucho team responded decisively in the fourth inning.
A simple two-run single by Jorge Bonifacio, added to an RBI by Mason McCoy, turned the score around. The Águilas’ pitching was dominant, retiring 17 consecutive batters between the third and eighth innings. Jonathan Aro took the win, while Justin Martínez secured the save, ending the undefeated streak of the team from San Francisco de Macorís.
Dramatic historic triumph for the Tigres del Licey
In the capital, the duel between the Tigres del Licey and the Leones del Escogido was decided in 10 innings with a score of 5-4. The hero of the night was veteran Emilio Bonifacio, who, acting as a pinch runner in the tenth inning, executed a steal of third base and took advantage of a wild pitch by reliever Kelly Austin to score the winning run.
It was a great game. Every time you win a game like that, in 10 innings, walking off the other team, it was a great game. I liked the reaction, but it is definitely more about focusing on what we can control.
Gilbert Gómez, manager of the Tigres del Licey
This triumph not only represents Licey’s 500th victory over Escogido in the circuit’s history, but it also consolidates their 2-0 lead in the season’s head-to-head series. Manager Gilbert Gómez praised Bonifacio’s game intelligence, although he called for defensive errors to be corrected to maintain the competitive level throughout the rest of the tournament.
