Joselito Mateo, alias “Barrabás”, dies after confrontation with DICRIM in Santo Domingo
The National Police confirmed the death of Joselito Mateo, known in the criminal world as “Barrabás,” 29 years old, who lost his life following an armed confrontation with agents of the Central Directorate of Investigation (DICRIM) in West Santo Domingo.
The incident occurred when a police patrol arrived at Francisco Alberto Caamaño Street, located in the El Café de Herrera sector, with the objective of executing three arrest warrants that were pending against him for various criminal acts.

According to the official report from the authorities, at the time of the intervention, Mateo attempted to evade arrest by firing a .380 caliber pistol at the officers. Faced with this aggression, members of the DICRIM repelled the attack, managing to wound the suspect, who was immediately transported to the Marcelino Vélez Santana Hospital, where he passed away while receiving medical attention last Tuesday night.
The authorities detailed that “Barrabás” was a priority target due to his criminal record, which included:
- Three active arrest warrants under numbers 2026-AJ0075033, 2026-AJ0075040, and 2025-AJ0069402.
- Alleged connection to multiple armed robberies recorded on the Santo Domingo Oeste Beltway and the 6 de Noviembre highway.
- Identified as the mastermind in various judicial proceedings for aggravated robbery against citizens.
The law enforcement institution reiterated its commitment to continue working to dismantle the gangs operating in the sectors of Santo Domingo, guaranteeing citizen security and strict compliance with the law in the face of any attempt at armed resistance.
