The trial on the merits for the Jet Set nightclub tragedy continues

The judicial process seeking to determine criminal liability following the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub, which occurred in Santo Domingo, experienced a recess this Friday. The court, presided over by Judge Franny González Castillo, has scheduled the resumption of the hearing for 3:00 in the afternoon in the Fourth Criminal Chamber of the National District.

During the continuation of the session, it is expected that the plaintiffs and the constituted civil parties will formally present their arguments before the bench, delving into the points that seek justice for the victims of this unfortunate event.

Case background

The tragedy, which shocked Dominican society, took place on April 8, 2025. The collapse of the establishment’s structure resulted in a devastating toll of 236 people dead and more than 180 injured, becoming one of the most tragic episodes recorded in the country’s recent history.

The trial against siblings Antonio and Maribel Espaillat aims to clarify the structural failures and potential negligence that led to the collapse of the nightclub’s roof.

In previous stages of this process, experts have pointed out that the concrete conditions in the building were critical, suggesting that the site should have been closed before the incident occurred. The development of this trial is being closely followed by public opinion, awaiting the establishment of the corresponding legal responsibilities for those involved.
