Tragedy in Madrid: Alleged case of gender-based violence in an elderly couple under investigation
A heartbreaking event has shocked the community of San Sebastián de los Reyes, north of Madrid, where the National Police have launched an investigation following the death of an 88-year-old woman and the discovery of the body of her 90-year-old husband in their private home.
The discovery took place on the morning of last Friday, September 11, when the couple’s caregiver entered the home and encountered a devastating scene: the man was found hanged, while his wife lay on the bed with serious injuries, still alive but in an agonizing state.
Event details
- The victim had multiple blows, mainly to the head and arms, signs that investigators interpret as a possible attempt to defend herself against the assault.
- After being assisted by the Summa-112 emergency services, the woman was taken to the Infanta Sofía Hospital, where she sadly passed away the following day due to the severity of her injuries.
- The authorities are working under the hypothesis that the man used a blunt object to assault his spouse before taking his own life, although the instrument used has not yet been identified.
The case is being handled by the Gender Violence Court, under the supervision of the Homicide unit and the Violent Crimes Group, who are working to clarify the facts and confirm whether we are facing a new sexist crime.
Until now, there were no records of previous complaints of domestic violence between the couple, which adds an element of surprise and dismay to those close to them. Francisco Martín, Government Delegate in the Community of Madrid, confirmed that investigations are ongoing and took the opportunity to urge citizens to make use of existing protection mechanisms against gender-based violence, underscoring the importance of eradicating this type of aggression in any setting.
