Rise of civil aviation: Dominican Republic consolidates its aerial modernization

The General Director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez Durán, presented a positive assessment of the transformation of the national aviation sector during his participation in the 34th edition of Dominican Week in the United States. The official highlighted that, in the last three years, the country has managed more than 585,000 air operations, moving more than 50 million passengers, which confirms the sustained growth of the industry.

Under the current government administration, the IDAC has prioritized an ambitious modernization process. This strategic plan is based on the acquisition of cutting-edge technology, the renewal of equipment, and the technical training of personnel, which are key areas to ensure safety in navigation, communication, and air traffic control.

Cutting-edge technology at the service of security

One of the pillars of this advancement has been the implementation of a network of three C-Band Doppler weather radars, strategically located in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and the Dominican Aeronautical Complex. According to Rodríguez Durán, this infrastructure allows for precise surveillance to anticipate atmospheric phenomena, protecting both air operations and the general population.

Having accurate and timely information allows us to anticipate risks, make better decisions, and contribute to saving lives.

Strategic investments and new projects

  • San Isidro Air Base: A new control tower with advanced communication and power systems was inaugurated, serving as a strategic backup for Las Américas International Airport.
  • Airport modernization: By February 2027, the installation of primary and secondary radars with ADS-B technology is projected for the Cibao and Puerto Plata airports.
  • New navigation aids: Precision approach systems and ILS radio aids will be implemented at the Punta Cana and Las Américas terminals.
  • Development in Pedernales: The IDAC is working on the technical adaptation of the Cabo Rojo International Airport, ensuring it meets the necessary standards for efficient operations.

Additionally, the IDAC director reported on the authorization of a corridor for night VFR flights under strict safety protocols, as well as the strengthening of the heliport network in hospital centers, an initiative that seeks to optimize emergency services in the country.

Finally, Rodríguez Durán reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to international standards during his meeting with officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington. This collaboration reaffirms the country’s position as a benchmark in the Caribbean regarding safety and efficiency in civil aviation.
