Honduras joins international coalition demanding a ceasefire in Ukraine

Within the framework of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Honduras stood alongside 50 other nations to support a joint declaration advocating for the immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. This diplomatic pronouncement seeks to pressure Russia to accept an unconditional ceasefire and return to the path toward a lasting and just peace.

The initiative was presented by Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. During her speech, Kallas emphasized that Ukraine has expressed its willingness for a complete ceasefire since March 2025, urging Russian forces to reciprocate with the same political will in strict adherence to international law.

An urgent call for sovereignty and civil protection

The statement emphasizes the need to respect the United Nations Charter, placing special emphasis on the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of States. Among the countries that signed this commitment, in addition to Honduras, nations such as Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Panama, Costa Rica, Morocco, Israel, New Zealand, and Switzerland stand out, along with the member states of the European Union.

The increase in the human cost of the war is alarming. Attacks against the population and civilian infrastructure have reached unprecedented levels, demanding immediate accountability and absolute respect for international humanitarian law.

Concern over escalation of violence and food security

The figures presented by the UN during the General Assembly reflect a critical reality. Rosemary DiCarlo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, reported that in the first eight months of 2026, more civilian casualties have been recorded in Ukraine than in the entire course of 2025.

  • Civil protection: Requirement to protect non-combatants and ensure accountability.
  • Black Sea security: Urgent need to safeguard commercial navigation and vital infrastructure for Ukrainian agricultural exports.
  • Global stability: The war continues to pose a direct threat to global food security.

This bloc of countries reaffirmed that the debate, held in New York under the presidency of diplomat Khalilur Rahman, is fundamental to articulating a negotiated exit to the conflict. With this signature, Honduras reaffirms its commitment to multilateral diplomacy and the search for peaceful solutions to global crises that affect international stability.
