The trap of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict: Hondurans trapped in a web of deception and war
The recruitment of Central and Latin American citizens for the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine has transformed into a silent tragedy that keeps dozens of families in suspense. Through heartbreaking testimonies, two Honduran families have broken their silence to expose how their loved ones were recruited under false promises, ending up trapped in a war machine thousands of miles away.
Stories marked by vulnerability and deception
The drama of these Hondurans has a common factor: the economic precariousness that pushes them to seek opportunities abroad. However, the recruitment methods vary. In the case of 36-year-old Wilfredo Lemuel Medina Zelaya, the need to pay for urgent medical treatment for his two-year-old daughter led him to accept a job offer that promised employment at a fishing harpoon manufacturing company.
My brother was deceived; they told him he would go to a harpoon construction company. But once he was there, it turned out they sent him to the army.

On the other hand, Héctor Gabriel Sandoval Zuniga, 31, was lured through an internet portal that offered contracts with salaries in dollars, combat zone bonuses, and millionaire indemnities. Despite family warnings, the promise of a better life led him to travel to Russia in May 2026.
The lost trail in Russian territory
- The journey: Both young men followed similar routes, making stops in Panama and Turkey before arriving on Russian soil.
- Precarious conditions: Upon arrival, they were stripped of their belongings, held incommunicado, and forced to sign documents in Russian without understanding their content.
- The last contact: Wilfredo Medina last communicated on July 10, 2026, mentioning that he would be sent to the Eastern Battalion in the Donbas. For his part, Héctor Sandoval sent a message on June 15 indicating that his personal equipment had been taken away and that he had been separated from his initial group.
An urgent call to the authorities
Following the disappearance of their relatives, the families have sought support from the Honduran Foreign Ministry. Although authorities have confirmed that the portals used by these young men are linked to human trafficking networks, diplomatic efforts have been limited due to the confidential nature of military contracts under Russian law.
Currently, the relatives of Wilfredo and Héctor have joined international search committees. Their demand is clear: they demand that the Government of Honduras activate extraordinary diplomatic channels to verify if their loved ones remain alive, if they are in medical centers or prison camps, and that the necessary steps be taken to achieve their repatriation.
