Tragedy at the border: Glacier collapse causes hundreds of victims in Nepal and Tibet

A catastrophic flood has shaken the border region between Nepal and Tibet, leaving a devastating toll of 362 people dead and approximately 1,400 missing. Following the initial reports, authorities from both countries and international specialists have confirmed that the origin of this natural disaster was the sudden collapse of a glacier.

The origin of the disaster: An unprecedented geological phenomenon

After initially analyzing the possibility of an earthquake or a conventional landslide, specialized agencies determined that the main cause was the detachment of an ice mass. According to data from China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the event occurred in an area located between 5,200 and 5,500 meters of altitude.

The ice mass descended at an alarming speed, traveling about 20 kilometers in just seven minutes, transforming into a destructive flow of mud, rocks, and debris that severely impacted the Gyirong border port.

Alarming figures and rescue efforts

The impact on the area has been devastating for the infrastructure and the safety of residents and visitors. The current situation, based on the most recent reports, is broken down as follows:

  • Nepal: 359 deaths have been confirmed, with the greatest impact concentrated in the Rasuwa district.
  • Tibet (China): Authorities have reported three fatalities and 558 missing persons in Gyirong County.
  • Affected tourists: According to the Nepal Tourism Board, at least 644 tourists remain missing, 517 of whom are foreigners.

A large portion of the victims were dragged by the force of the water and mud toward the lower parts of the river, complicating search and rescue efforts, which extend for several kilometers due to the magnitude of the sediment and infrastructure debris that still cover the affected area.

Authorities continue to work in the area to locate the missing and assist communities that have been left isolated following the passage of this natural phenomenon.
