George Russell conquers the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a vibrant day

British driver George Russell, representing the Mercedes team, claimed victory this Saturday at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, corresponding to the fifteenth round of the Formula One world calendar. On the demanding Baku street circuit, Russell demonstrated his skill behind the wheel to secure his third win of the season and the eighth of his career in the pinnacle of motorsport.

The podium was completed by the Dutchman Max Verstappen, who crossed the finish line in second position, followed by the Frenchman Isack Hadjar, who achieved an outstanding performance to secure third place.

Antonelli’s comeback and championship outlook

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s teammate and current championship leader, was one of the day’s protagonists after executing an impressive comeback. The Italian, who started the competition from sixteenth place, managed to climb eleven positions to finish in fifth place. With this result, Antonelli reaffirms his dominance in the general standings with a total of 302 points, maintaining a solid lead of 66 units over his teammate.

Consistency in Baku has been key for the Mercedes team, which continues to consolidate its performance in a highly competitive season.

Incidents and notable results

  • Charles Leclerc crossed the finish line in fourth position.
  • Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion, finished in sixth place.
  • Arvid Lindblad achieved a remarkable seventh position in his debut.
  • The top 10 was completed by Haas drivers, Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman, along with Carlos Sainz, who claimed the last available point.

The race was marked by several retirements. Fernando Alonso had to withdraw on lap 21 due to an apparent engine failure. Likewise, the competition was affected by an accident after the first restart, which involved Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Lando Norris, taking them out of contention. For his part, the Mexican Sergio Pérez finished in fifteenth position.

Formula One is now preparing for its next challenge: the Bahrain Grand Prix, an event that was rescheduled and will take place next weekend at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.
