Clarification on electricity billing: The increase is due to consumption and not the rate
The Electricity Distribution Companies (Edeeste, Edenorte, and Edesur) have issued an official statement to clarify to the public that the increase reflected in recent electricity bills is due exclusively to higher energy consumption. According to the authorities, this phenomenon is directly related to the high temperatures recorded during the summer season.
The distributors emphasized that there has been no increase in the electricity rate, recalling that adjustments in this area have been suspended since March 2022. The rise in the final amounts is a direct consequence of the higher energy demand in homes and businesses.
Factors influencing the increase
- Tariff block jump: By increasing energy consumption during the billing period, some users may exceed their usual range and move to a higher tariff block, which impacts the final cost.
- Use of air conditioning: The intensive use of air conditioners and cooling equipment has skyrocketed demand.
Historical record of energy demand
The need to keep spaces cool has led the national electrical system to record unprecedented figures. As of July 30, 2026, peak demand reached 4,330.80 megawatts (MW), significantly surpassing the previous record of 3,923 MW set in August 2025. This 10.4% growth reflects the high reliance on air conditioning equipment during heat waves.
