Dominican writer Osiris Madera triumphs at the Madrid Book Fair with the 2026 Escriduende Award
Dominican literature continues to reap success on the world’s most prestigious stages. On this occasion, the writer and poet Osiris Madera was awarded the 2026 Escriduende Prize, obtaining recognition for Best Latin American Novel for his outstanding work titled Glenna and Maria meet.
The awards ceremony took place at the iconic Casa de Vacas Cultural Center, located in El Retiro Park, during the renowned Madrid Book Fair. The person in charge of formally presenting the award was the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Kingdom of Spain, Tony Raful, who highlighted the author’s narrative quality.
This distinction reaffirms the great moment that our country’s narrative is experiencing abroad, consolidating the legacy of Dominican authors who have marked a before and after in Hispanic literature.

A milestone for Dominican literature
Upon receiving the award, Madera expressed his gratitude and underscored the significance of this achievement, as he became the third Dominican author to reach an international recognition of this magnitude. In his speech, he recalled the precedent set by illustrious figures of national literature:
- Pedro Vergés, awarded the Blasco Ibáñez Prize.
- Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, recognized with the José María Arguedas Prize.
The international jury, chaired by the renowned philologist Francisco Gutiérrez Carbajo, evaluated various proposals before selecting Madera’s work, highlighting its aesthetic and narrative proposal. This award was one of the highlights of the closing activities of the Madrid Book Fair, an event that serves as an epicenter for culture and global literary exchange.
Finally, the author thanked the Sial Pigmalión Publishing Group for the constant support it provides to Dominican writers, allowing their works to cross borders and reach readers from diverse latitudes, thus strengthening the projection of Creole culture in the international arena.
