Dominican economy maintains solid pace with accumulated growth of 4.5% as of August 2026
The economy of the Dominican Republic continues to show an upward and stable trajectory. According to data from the Monthly Economic Activity Indicator (IMAE), the country closed the January-August 2026 period with an accumulated average growth of 4.5%, significantly exceeding the 2.3% recorded in the same period of the previous year. In the month of August alone, the year-on-year variation stood at 3.8%.
Sectors that drive economic dynamism
This positive performance is the result of widespread growth across various productive sectors. Among the pillars that have sustained the economy are:
- Construction (7.9%): Driven by private investment projects and public infrastructure works, in addition to a notable 16.2% increase in sectoral credit.
- Financial Services (9.4%): Benefited from the increase in foreign exchange operations, credit cards, and transfers.
- Manufacturing (Free Zones 3.4% and Local 3.1%): Sustained by exports of tobacco, jewelry, and pharmaceutical products.
- Complementary services: Sectors such as education, energy, water, and transport also reported growth rates exceeding 3%.
The cumulative growth of 4.5% projected for the end of the year places the country in a privileged position, exceeding the average expansion estimated for Latin America and doubling the figures obtained in 2025.
Challenges and sectoral behavior
Despite the general progress, some sectors faced challenges during August. Mining recorded a 14.6% drop, mainly explained by scheduled maintenance at the country’s main gold extraction plant. For its part, agricultural activity experienced a 1.4% contraction as a direct consequence of the drought that has impacted various productive regions, affecting crops such as rice and legumes.
Tourism: a constant engine
The hotel, bar, and restaurant sector maintains its vitality, with a year-on-year growth of 2.3% in August. The country received 725,481 tourists that month, an increase of 2.6% compared to the previous year. In the cumulative total for the first eight months of the year, the nation has received more than 6.6 million visitors, validating the effectiveness of national tourism promotion strategies.
With these results, economic authorities maintain their growth projections at around 4.5% for the end of 2026, reaffirming the resilience and competitive potential of the Dominican economy in the regional context.
