Tension at the UN: Delegates walk out of the Assembly during Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu experienced a tense moment during his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. As he took the podium, dozens of diplomats chose to leave the hall in a coordinated protest, leaving much of the room empty as the leader began his address.

The atmosphere at the UN headquarters turned chaotic, marked by boos and shouts that forced the President of the General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, to repeatedly call for order to allow the speech to continue.

Netanyahu’s response

Far from ignoring the situation, the Israeli leader reacted directly to the mass walkout of the delegates, launching a defiant message from the podium:

If there are other moral cowards who have not yet left the room, please leave now.

Subsequently, Netanyahu argued that his nation’s actions not only protect Israel, but also benefit other countries whose representatives decided to be absent. Likewise, he stated that, in private, various world leaders express their support for the operations carried out against Iran.

Protest context

This diplomatic mobilization was driven by the Palestinian mission to the United Nations, who made a formal call to other delegations to carry out a collective walkout from the hall in the presence of the Israeli prime minister. This event reflects the deep division and international criticism facing the government of Israel due to its current military operations in Gaza and its policies in the West Bank.

Despite the accusations of genocide weighing on their administration, Israeli authorities maintain their stance that the military maneuvers have the sole purpose of combating Hamas militants. The episode recorded at the General Assembly is consolidated as one of the most significant and visible diplomatic protests of the current edition of the global event.
