Tragedy in Indonesia: Death toll rises to 64 after shipwreck in the Java Sea
The death toll following the sinking of the ferry Virgo Transport 8, which occurred two weeks ago in Indonesian waters, has risen to 64 people. Local authorities confirmed this figure during a recent update on the rescue operations that are ongoing in the Java Sea area.
According to data provided by Yudhi Bramantyo, director of the National Search and Rescue Agency, the vessel was carrying a total of 243 passengers. Of this group, 172 people were located during the evacuation efforts, with 108 of them surviving, while the number of confirmed victims reached 64 deceased.
Search efforts continue
Despite the time elapsed since the incident, emergency teams continue to deploy search operations to locate the 71 passengers who remain reported as missing. This current figure significantly exceeds the initial reports, which placed the number of deaths at 20.
The situation in the Java Sea remains critical as rescue teams exhaust efforts to locate those missing in one of the archipelago’s busiest maritime routes.
