Dominican Republic prepares for the 2026 National Earthquake Evacuation Drill
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has underscored the strategic importance of executing national earthquake preparedness exercises. These maneuvers aim to mobilize approximately three million people, thereby consolidating the nation’s operational response capacity in the face of large-scale seismic events.
During the official presentation of the 2026 National Earthquake Evacuation Drill, authorities highlighted that these activities are fundamental to evaluating the effectiveness of current protocols and raising the levels of preparedness for both public institutions and the general public.
A territory exposed to 14 seismic faults
The technical body emphasized that the Dominican Republic presents particular geographical conditions as an island territory. The existence of 14 active seismic faults in the region forces the country to maintain a state of constant alert and training to mitigate the possible impacts of a significant seismic movement.
Preparation must involve both the public and private sectors as well as the citizenry, because the consequences of an earthquake can simultaneously affect multiple areas of the national territory.
