COE issues green alert in five provinces due to hydrological risk

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a green alert this Wednesday for five provinces in the country. This preventive measure is in response to a hydrological pre-alert issued by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) due to the latent risk of flash floods in rivers, streams, and creeks.

Provinces under surveillance

The demarcations under this alert level are Elías Piña, San Juan, Dajabón, Independencia, and Santiago Rodríguez. In these areas, authorities have emphasized the need for citizens to remain vigilant regarding any unusual increase in the flow of nearby tributaries.

  • Independencia
  • Santiago Rodríguez

Areas of greatest attention

The emergency agency has requested special caution from residents near the basins of the Los Baos, Macasía, Tocino, Dajabón, Guayubín, Maguaca, Chacuey, San Juan, Arroyo Loro, Jimaní, and Masacre rivers. The COE reiterates the prohibition of crossing these tributaries when they show elevated levels, thus avoiding dangerous situations for citizens.

The population is urged to stay away from areas vulnerable to flooding and to strictly follow the guidance of emergency response agencies.

Weather forecast for Thursday

According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), a decrease in humidity levels is expected for this Thursday, which will favor a reduction in rainfall across much of the national territory. However, the combination of a trough, daytime heating, and orographic effects could generate local downpours with thunderstorms and isolated wind gusts.

The forecasted rains could be concentrated mainly in Santiago, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Monte Plata, as well as in the north of San Juan and Azua. In the rest of the country, more stable weather conditions are expected, ideal for outdoor activities, although the call for caution remains in the areas under alert.
