The Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation (CBPC) has issued a definitive resolution regarding the immediate future of star Dominican player Robinson Canó. According to the determination made by the organization, the veteran second baseman must join the Tomateros de Culiacán in Mexico for the 2026-27 winter season, dismissing the claims of the Estrellas Orientales.
The legal dispute, which kept winter baseball fans in suspense, concluded after it was confirmed that the 48-hour deadline to file an appeal has expired, leaving the Confederation’s ruling as a final and unappealable decision. In this way, the team from the ARCO Mexican Pacific League secures the participation of the experienced player.
The origin of the conflict and current regulations
The conflict arose last May, when the Mexican team announced the signing of Canó. The controversy centered on the regulations of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) regarding free agency and the movement of its players to other leagues that are members of the CBPC.
The regulations stipulate that, for a player to be able to emigrate to another Caribbean league, their original team in Dominican territory must have failed to present a financial offer representing at least 75% of the salary earned by the athlete in the previous season. In the absence of such an offer, the player is authorized to seek other international opportunities with the endorsement of LIDOM.
The Estrellas Orientales, under the baseball operations management led by Albert Pujols, had maintained that they presented a competitive proposal to the player. However, it was never publicly confirmed whether said offer met the percentage threshold required by regulations to retain his federative rights.
