The Metropolitano Stadium in Barranquilla transforms for the Copa Sudamericana final
The Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez stadium, iconic home of the Colombian national team and Junior de Barranquilla, is going through its final stage of renovation. With an investment exceeding 45 million dollars, the venue is being adapted to become the largest and most modern stadium in Colombia, reaching a capacity of 65,000 spectators for the grand final of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana, scheduled for next November 21st.
The works, which began in January, have radically transformed the structure of the so-called Colossus of the 20 de Julio Citadel. Among the most significant improvements is the removal of the athletic track and the lowering of the playing field level, which allows the stands to be closer to the grass, optimizing visibility. In addition, a Bermuda 419 hybrid grass has been installed, equipped with state-of-the-art drainage and irrigation technology to withstand the area’s tropical climate.
Top-tier technology and modernization
The project is not limited only to public capacity. The mayor of Barranquilla, Alejandro Char, has placed special emphasis on the technological modernization of the stadium. The facade now features a system of 74,000 LED lights capable of projecting animations and colors, complemented by state-of-the-art 4K screens and a 500-meter perimeter LED strip.
- Installation of 10,800 retractable seats (90% progress).
- Increase in sanitary capacity from 300 to 900 units.
- Four modern dressing rooms, including exclusive spaces for the Colombia National Team and Junior.
- Expansion of access points, going from 4 to 14 entry points.
- New VIP areas, press rooms, and museums dedicated to national soccer.
The South American Football Confederation has ratified Barranquilla as the official host city following technical inspections that confirmed strict compliance with the construction schedule, ensuring that the stadium will be ready to welcome continental fans.

The final already has its first confirmed protagonist: Boca Juniors, after overcoming Vasco da Gama. The Argentine team awaits its rival, which will emerge from the series between Atlético Mineiro and Montevideo City Torque. The event is expected to generate an economic impact of over 60 million dollars for the city, with hotel occupancy projected to reach maximum capacity.
A historical legacy in evolution
Since its inauguration on May 11, 1986, the Metropolitano has witnessed memorable milestones, such as the victory in the 2001 Copa América and various World Cup qualifications for the national team. With this renovation, Barranquilla reaffirms its status as a sports and cultural epicenter capable of hosting massive shows for up to 75,000 people, consolidating itself as an international benchmark in the organization of major events.
