Dominican artisans call for greater integration and social benefits in the tourism sector
During the recent celebration of the 38th Asonahores Trade Fair in Punta Cana, local artisans raised their voices to request greater institutional support. The entrepreneurs highlighted that, to strengthen Dominican cultural identity and the economy, it is essential that the sector receives social benefits and greater integration into the dynamics of national tourism.
Elizabeth Medrano, representative of Renace Organic Soaps, emphasized that artisanal work must be recognized as a vital economic activity that supports numerous families. Among the guild’s main requests, the need for access to health insurance and pension plans stands out, which are basic tools to guarantee the stability of those who keep the country’s manual traditions alive.
We need a little more support so that we are taken into account. Our work deserves to be valued as an income generator that uses local raw materials, such as coconut oil, to create high-quality products.

Craftsmanship as a pillar of Dominican tourism
For her part, Dali del Castillo, from Piezas de Arte RD, emphasized the importance of including artisans in a broader agenda of tourism activities. According to Del Castillo, her creations —which include hand-painted hats and bags with Dominican motifs— are highly demanded by foreign visitors who seek to take a piece of the local culture back to their home countries.
