Modernization at AILA: The new South Terminal will increase the country’s operational capacity
The Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA), is preparing for a qualitative leap in its infrastructure with the launch of its new South Terminal. This strategic project seeks to strengthen the Dominican Republic’s connectivity, integrating cutting-edge technology to optimize passenger flow and aircraft management.
Expanded capacity and greater comfort for travelers
The expansion includes the addition of eight new boarding and disembarking bridges, which will be operational for both departures and arrivals. With this improvement, the airport will increase its total number of bridges from 9 to 17, which translates into a significant reduction in the use of buses for transporting passengers to remote positions, ensuring a more agile and comfortable boarding process.
In addition, the infrastructure will have a total of 40 aircraft parking positions, consolidating AILA as a key logistics hub in the Caribbean in the face of sustained growth in international air traffic.
MARS Technology: Versatility for the aviation market
One of the most notable aspects of this project is the implementation of the MARS (Multi Aircraft Ramp System). With the addition of three new positions using this technology, the airport will have a total of eight flexible spaces, allowing for dynamic apron management.
- Adaptability: MARS positions can be configured according to needs, allowing for the reception of everything from narrow-body aircraft, such as Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 models, to wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
- Efficiency: This flexibility eliminates operational rigidity, allowing for the distribution of aircraft based on the actual daily demand.
- Strategic growth: The new terminal will allow for the simultaneous management of multiple large aircraft, an essential capacity for attracting new routes from long-haul international markets.
The construction of the South Terminal responds to the vision of modernizing Dominican airport infrastructure, adapting to the demands of a sector that continues to expand and requires facilities that meet global standards.
With these improvements, AILA not only increases its volume of operations, but also improves the end-user experience, consolidating its position as the main air gateway to the Dominican Republic.
