President Luis Abinader addresses impact of tariffs and regional security
The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, recently referred to the tariff policy promoted by the Donald Trump administration, noting that these measures are here to stay. However, the president clarified that Latin American countries will have the most competitive tariff levels within this new trade framework.
In his statements from New Jersey, the Dominican head of state emphasized that his government maintains a constant dialogue with U.S. authorities. The main objective of these communications is to ensure that the conditions stipulated in the Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA), which has governed trade between both nations since 2004, are respected.
The Dominican position is clear: we seek to maintain the conditions established in the current trade agreement, thus guaranteeing the economic stability of our productive sectors.
Focus on security and the fight against organized crime
Beyond the economic agenda, President Abinader highlighted the progress in regional cooperation to combat transnational scourges such as drug trafficking and organized crime. As he detailed, there is a consensus among the region’s leaders to strengthen shared security mechanisms.
In this regard, the president announced that a specialized meeting will soon be held in the Caribbean within the framework of the initiative called Shield of the Americas. Abinader highlighted the strategic position of the Dominican Republic in this fight:
- The Dominican Republic plays a central role in dismantling criminal structures.
- The transnational nature of these groups demands a coordinated and unified response among nations.
- Strengthening intelligence and prosecution is a priority to ensure security on the continent.
The president concluded that close collaboration between American countries is fundamental to effectively confront criminal organizations that operate beyond national borders.
