Luis Abinader defends the overseas vote and describes it as an inalienable right

The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, spoke out forcefully regarding proposals suggesting the elimination of the vote for Dominican citizens residing outside the national territory. During a meeting with the press at William Paterson University in New Jersey, the president categorically rejected any initiative that seeks to deprive the diaspora of their participation in democratic processes.

For the head of state, proposing the elimination of this right constitutes a significant setback for the Dominican democratic system. Abinader emphasized that the Dominican community abroad is an essential part of the nation and, therefore, their voice must continue to be heard at the polls.

Any proposal aimed at eliminating the vote of Dominicans abroad is absurd and a setback for our democracy.

Focus on participation and not on exclusion

The president’s statements come in response to comments recently made by analysts, who have questioned the usefulness of the overseas vote based on the levels of abstention recorded in past electoral processes. Faced with this argument, President Abinader maintained a different stance:

  • The goal should not be exclusion, but the search for comprehensive solutions.
  • It is necessary to implement more efficient mechanisms that incentivize and facilitate the electoral participation of Dominicans residing abroad.
  • The State’s commitment is to strengthen the bond with citizens, regardless of their place of residence.

With this position, the Executive Branch reaffirms its support for the political rights of the diaspora, betting on strategies that promote greater integration of Dominicans abroad into the political and social life of the country.
