Luis Abinader on Trump tariffs: Latin America will maintain preferential conditions
The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, recently addressed the tariff policy promoted by the Donald Trump administration. During his speech, the president was emphatic in pointing out that these tax measures are projected to be permanent, although he clarified that Latin American countries will benefit from the lowest rates within this new trade scheme.
Within the framework of diplomatic talks, the Dominican head of state confirmed that his government maintains a constant dialogue with U.S. authorities. The main objective of these efforts is to ensure that the integrity of the Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA), in force since 2004, is respected, seeking to ensure that current conditions remain unchanged for the Caribbean nation.
Regional security and the fight against drug trafficking
In addition to economic issues, President Abinader highlighted the progress in the regional security agenda. He stressed that there is reinforced coordination among the nations of the continent to effectively combat organized crime and drug trafficking, scourges that operate under transnational structures.
The Dominican Republic plays a central role in the efforts against organized crime and drug trafficking. Because these groups operate transnationally, greater collaboration between countries is required to strengthen actions for the prosecution and dismantling of their structures.

As part of this security strategy, the president announced that a specialized meeting will soon be held in the Caribbean within the framework of the initiative called Shield of the Americas. The purpose of this meeting is to coordinate joint actions and preventive tactics against criminal threats that affect the stability of the region.
