Indonesia on alert after 6.6 magnitude earthquake in the Java Sea
A 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook the waters of the Java Sea this Saturday, impacting near the coast of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. According to technical reports, the epicenter was located about 125 kilometers off the coast, situated at a considerable depth of 358.6 kilometers.
Despite the magnitude of the event, local authorities have confirmed that no tsunami warning has been issued. Preliminary assessments indicate that the earthquake does not pose a major threat of significant structural damage in nearby land areas.
Seismic context in Indonesia
Indonesia is a region characterized by its high vulnerability to geological phenomena, due to the fact that it is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. This geographical area records around 7,000 earthquakes annually, although the vast majority of these tend to be of moderate intensity.
The recent history of the archipelago reminds us of the territory’s fragility in the face of these natural events. On August 15th, a strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Flores Island, leaving a tragic toll of 68 people dead, more than 200 injured, and thousands of citizens displaced from their homes.
