Tony Stewart Continues in Drag Racing and Will Compete Against His Wife in 2026

NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart will continue his drag racing career in 2026, and the stage will be even more exciting: he will compete directly against his wife. Stewart announced on Thursday that he will pilot a Top Fuel dragster for Elite Motorsports next season. This decision comes a week after announcing his plans to cede his position in the NHRA to his wife, Leah Pruett, who was off the tracks for a little over a year after giving birth to their son, Dominic. Pruett will resume her role at Tony Stewart Racing in 2026, and Stewart will now compete against her, despite the marketing alliance between their teams.

“First things first, we need to fund the program, but letting everyone know our intentions will help,” commented team owner Richard Freeman.

Freeman added that Stewart is a great driver, recognized for his ability to drive any vehicle, and that his presence is valuable for drag racing, both as a team owner and at the wheel. Freeman expressed his enthusiasm for the marketing alliance with Tony Stewart Racing, which allows Stewart to maintain a position in Top Fuel and the opportunity to compete with his wife. Freeman acquired Josh Hart’s Top Fuel operation earlier this month, thus securing one of the most prominent drivers in motorsports.

“From the beginning I said I was just keeping Leah’s seat warm and it would be hers as soon as she was ready to return,” Stewart stated.

Stewart explained that, although he wanted to continue competing, TSR was not in a position to add a second Top Fuel car. However, thanks to the recent alliance and Richard’s purchase of Josh Hart’s team, he will be able to continue working as an owner and driver, contributing to the growth of both organizations. The 2026 season will mark Stewart’s third year in Top Fuel. The three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and 1997 IndyCar champion was named NHRA Rookie of the Year in 2024 and achieved two Top Fuel victories this year. With five races remaining in the NHRA season, Stewart is second in points.
