NASCAR in Chicago: The Future of the Event in Doubt

Chicago is preparing for the third edition of the NASCAR race in the city center, but the future of the event is uncertain. Julie Giese, track president, is overseeing the ambitious construction of the street circuit, in addition to managing all aspects of the race weekend. The three-year contract between NASCAR and the city, announced in 2022, includes two mutual options, whose fate is still unclear. Giese has mentioned “good conversations” between NASCAR and the city, suggesting that there is time to explore possibilities beyond the current event.

Right now, the focus is on executing a great 2025. We will continue to converse with the city. But right now, honestly, the most consistent conversations are those of planning.

The event in Chicago, held on a 2.2-mile circuit with 12 turns, with Lake Michigan and Grant Park as a backdrop, is a festival that attracts a wide audience, including fans and new NASCAR followers.

Although there were initial concerns about the circuit and the inconvenience for local businesses and residents due to street closures, the organizers have reduced the construction time and made adjustments based on feedback from the fans.

This year, entry is free for children under 12 on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend has gained followers within NASCAR.

It’s fun to see and hear from the industry people who come early, and they’re going to enjoy the city for a few days. What I hear most from our drivers is that they love staying at a hotel right across the street. They walk down Michigan Avenue and they’re at the track.

The rain has affected the first two editions. Heavy rain almost canceled the inaugural weekend, and last year’s Cup race was shortened due to a rain delay and lack of sunlight. When the drivers have been on the track, the races have been exciting. Shane van Gisbergen overtook Justin Haley and Chase Elliott on his way to a historic Cup victory in 2023, and Alex Bowman ended an 80-race drought with his victory last year.

The track has been good, it has been a race track and has overtaking zones and the setting is fantastic in terms of the backdrop in which we run. There are many positive things for the Chicago Street Race. It will probably move in the future, but it is in the mold in which I would like to see any street race that they continue to implement in the future.
