NASCAR Will Not Apply Restrictions to Driver Celebrations

Following the incident in which Xfinity driver Connor Zilisch suffered a fall in Victory Lane and fractured his collarbone, NASCAR has confirmed that it will not implement new policies to limit driver celebrations.

Mike Forde, NASCAR’s managing director of communications, addressed the issue on the “Hauler Talk” podcast, revealed on Wednesday. Forde stated that certain precautions will be taken in Victory Lane, but no new rules will be established. Zilisch had secured his sixth victory of the season at Watkins Glen International on Saturday. During the celebration, he climbed onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet, slipping and falling onto the asphalt. The 19-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a clavicle fracture.

I’m very grateful to be out of that, and I guess I didn’t walk out, but I’m very grateful to be walking today and to be okay.

Forde indicated that NASCAR will not prohibit drivers from climbing on the doors in Victory Lane. Likewise, NASCAR will take new precautions to avoid circumstances similar to those that caused Zilisch’s fall. Forde explained that the car window net may have been a factor in the incident. Therefore, reviews will be carried out to ensure that the net is well secured and to avoid possible slips.

Zilisch underwent surgery on Tuesday and it is not yet clear if he will recover in time for the next Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway on August 22. Previously, Zilisch missed a race due to a back injury sustained in an accident at Talladega Superspeedway, for which he received a waiver. Forde did not specify whether Zilisch would receive a waiver for the playoffs in case he missed the race at Daytona.
