AVONDALE, Ariz. – Kyle Larson took the victory in the NASCAR championship, snatching the title from Denny Hamlin in a final full of unexpected twists at Phoenix Raceway. Larson, who had already won his first title in 2021, once again demonstrated his skill on the track, overcoming adversity and securing his second championship.

An Unexpected Ending

The race, which seemed to be in Hamlin’s hands, changed drastically with a late yellow flag. William Byron, another title contender, suffered a puncture that sent his car into the wall, causing the interruption and the entry of the safety car.

“Simply incredible. I can’t believe it,” Larson expressed, visibly excited.

The yellow flag gave Larson the opportunity to close the gap, while Hamlin, who was leading the race at that moment, was forced to pit to change tires.

This strategy allowed Larson, who only changed two tires, to gain positions and place himself in a favorable position for the restart of the race.

Hamlin’s Disillusionment

For Hamlin, the yellow flag represented the loss of a victory that seemed assured. The 44-year-old driver, who had dominated much of the race, saw his hopes vanish in the final laps.

“I don’t really have much emotion right now. Just numb from the shock,” Hamlin said, visibly affected.

Denny Hamlin
Despite his efforts, Hamlin was unable to recover the lost ground, finishing in sixth place. Ryan Blaney, who was not in contention for the title, won the race.

Es la sexta vez que un campeonato de NASCAR se le escapa a Denny Hamlin en sus 20 años conduciendo para Joe Gibbs Racing. Lideró 208 de las 319 vueltas y partió desde la pole. “No podía hacer nada diferente”, dijo Hamlin.
This is the sixth time Hamlin has seen the title slip away in his 20-year career. He led 208 of the 319 laps and started from the pole position. Hamlin’s teammate, Chase Briscoe, finished in 18th place, while Byron, Larson’s teammate, finished in 33rd place after his late issue. Byron felt bad about ruining Hamlin’s opportunity, even though his Hendrick Motorsports teammate won the championship.
