Kyle Larson Crowned NASCAR Champion in Dramatic Finale

AVONDALE, Arizona – Kyle Larson clinched his second NASCAR championship in a race full of unexpected twists that left Denny Hamlin heartbroken. The final, held at Phoenix Raceway, culminated in a late caution that changed the course of the competition, depriving Hamlin of his first title. Larson, aware that he could not catch Hamlin in the final laps without external intervention, received the help he needed. The yellow flag, caused by a puncture of William Byron, altered the fate of the race when Hamlin seemed to have the victory secured.

Simply incredible. I can’t believe it.

The teams’ strategy played a crucial role in the restart. Hamlin, leading the race, chose to change all four tires, while Larson only changed two. This decision positioned Larson in fifth place and Hamlin in tenth for the final two laps.

Despite his efforts, Hamlin finished in sixth place, while Larson secured third place, enough to obtain the championship. Ryan Blaney, who was not in contention for the title, won the race.

I don’t really have much emotion right now. I’m just numb because I’m in shock. We were 40 seconds away from a championship. This sport can drive you absolutely crazy because sometimes speed, talent, none of that matters.

Denny Hamlin
Hamlin’s frustration was evident. The driver, who led 208 of the 319 laps and started from the pole position, saw his opportunity to be crowned champion for the sixth time in his 20-year career vanish.

Larson, for his part, expressed his surprise and gratitude. The driver, who had not won a race since the beginning of May, acknowledged that the championship was an unexpected reward for his team. Chase Briscoe, Hamlin’s teammate, finished in 18th place, while Byron, Larson’s teammate, suffered a setback that ruined Hamlin’s chances.
