Kyle Larson Crowned NASCAR Champion in a Dramatic Final

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Kyle Larson took the victory in the NASCAR Championship, denying Denny Hamlin the title he so craved in a race full of unexpected twists at Phoenix Raceway. Larson, who already holds two titles in his career, took advantage of a late caution flag that altered the course of the competition, sending it into overtime and frustrating Hamlin’s hopes.

Simply incredible. I can’t believe it.

Kyle Larson celebra con sus hijos tras asegurar el Campeonato de la NASCAR Cup Series 2025. Es el segundo campeonato para Larson, quien ganó su primer título en 2021 cuando se unió a Hendrick Motorsports.
The yellow flag, caused by a puncture from William Byron, changed the race’s landscape when Hamlin seemed to have the victory secured. Hamlin, who was leading the race, had to pit to change tires, while Larson opted for only two. This strategic change positioned Larson in fifth place for the final two-lap sprint, while Hamlin was in tenth. Despite his efforts, Hamlin failed to catch Larson, finishing sixth, while Ryan Blaney, who was not in contention for the title, took the victory in the race.

I don’t really have much emotion right now. I’m just numb from the shock.

Denny Hamlin
The disappointment took hold of the Joe Gibbs Racing team, with Hamlin visibly affected. For Hamlin, this was the sixth time the title has slipped away in his 20-year career.

Larson, for his part, expressed his amazement at the victory, especially after a period of difficulties on the track. The 44-year-old driver, who had been affected by bad luck in previous finals, won the pole and dominated the race until the final lap. Hamlin’s teammate, Chase Briscoe, finished 18th in his championship final debut, while Byron, Larson’s teammate, finished 33rd after his late issue. Byron regretted having hurt Hamlin’s chances.
