Denny Hamlin, NASCAR driver, returned to the victory circle at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, marking his first triumph since losing the championship four months ago and the first since his father’s death in a fire in December.

I knew it would take me a few weeks to feel like I was driving. In the last few weeks, I definitely regained my love for this, I refocused. These are great opportunities for us.

His 61st career victory comes after a period of emotional challenges. His previous victory, number 60, was also in Las Vegas, and he dedicated it to his father. After a difficult end to the season, where the strategy in the pit stop cost him the championship, Hamlin faced a year marked by tragedy and struggle. In addition to his achievements as a driver, Hamlin, as a co-owner of 23XI Racing, was part of the winning team in a federal lawsuit against NASCAR in December. Weeks later, his father passed away in a fire. Hamlin demonstrated his resilience by returning to the track and achieving victory. He overcame a speeding penalty and rallied from the 31st position, dominating the race for Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota, leading 134 laps. The celebration was even more special sharing the moment with his fiancée and his three children, knowing that his father would be proud.

This is a family sport. My family obviously made so many sacrifices to help me get here. Now that I’ve grown up, generations of Hamlins follow me, it’s great that mom can see this. I know dad is still saying: ‘That’s my boy’. A hell of a day.

The team owner, Joe Gibbs, praised Hamlin’s resilience.

He’s been through a lot. Denny seems to have the ability to keep working on things. He has a way of remaining very competitive. I appreciate him very much. We’ve been with Denny for about 20 years. It’s been a very good journey for us.

Joe Gibbs
Toyota has dominated, winning four of the first five races of the season. In the race, Chase Elliott and William Byron, both from Hendrick Motorsports, finished in second and third place respectively, while Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs, from JGR, completed the top five.

It makes my job a lot easier when I can drive Toyotas so fast.

This result marks the third consecutive top-five for Gibbs, who is at the center of a federal lawsuit filed by JGR against former competition director Chris Gabehart. The JGR team is seeking a restraining order to prevent Gabehart from working for Spire Motorsports.

I just don’t want to be in court. But we’re going to be there. I think it’s important for us to move forward with this.

Joe Gibbs
Gabehart argues that his time at JGR became unsustainable due to preferential treatment towards Gibbs, the grandson of the team owner. JGR alleges that Gabehart stole confidential information before leaving the team and had a non-compete clause. Gabehart claims that JGR stopped paying him in November and that his current role at Spire is completely different from the one he had at Gibbs. Gabehart was present at the circuit with Spire, whose trucks were parked next to those of JGR.
