Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs: Tension at Joe Gibbs Racing

After the incident on the track between Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs, teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing, calm seems to have returned to the team. The crash occurred when Hamlin, seeking a position, was hindered by Gibbs in New Hampshire. Hamlin, who is competing in the playoffs for his first championship in the Cup Series, and Gibbs, who is not eligible for the title, had contact that generated questions within the team. Hamlin, via the radio, suggested that the organization might be afraid to give orders to the 22-year-old young driver.

I definitely got too upset, and it was too far on my part.

Hamlin admitted that he went too far and that there were actions he could have handled differently. His teammate, Christopher Bell, indicated that the message about how Toyota drivers should compete with each other at this stage of the season was clear: “We shouldn’t crash into each other.” Chase Briscoe, also from JGR, achieved the pole position for the race at Kansas Speedway, and will start alongside Hamlin. Briscoe has secured seven poles this season, the most since Kyle Busch in 2017. Kyle Larson, from Hendrick Motorsports, commented on the situation, indicating that in the fight for the victory, there will be no yielding to a teammate, but that in other situations, a more collaborative behavior is expected.
