Denny Hamlin Keeps Calm Amid Legal Battle with NASCAR
BROOKLYN, Mich. – Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing alongside Michael Jordan, stands firm despite a recent federal panel decision that overturned a court order in the antitrust case against NASCAR.Hamlin expressed his confidence on Saturday, a day before the FireKeepers Casino 400. He stated that Michael Jordan shares his same perspective. The case focuses on the dispute between 23XI Racing and Front Row with NASCAR, after refusing to sign new agreements regarding the renewal of their licenses. The teams requested a temporary restraining order to be recognized as licensed teams for this season, but the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of NASCAR. Hamlin indicated that they are evaluating all available options. The teams, still without victories this year, argued that the court order was necessary because the current licensing agreement prevents them from suing NASCAR. 23XI also alleged that it would be harmed, as Tyler Reddick’s contract would make him a free agent if the team could not guarantee him a license-protected car. Hamlin assured he was not worried about losing drivers due to the uncertainty. Tyler Reddick, last year’s regular season champion and a contender for the Cup title in November, arrives at Sunday’s race in Michigan in sixth place in the Cup standings. The licensing system in NASCAR is similar to franchises in other sports, but licenses are revocable by NASCAR and have expiration dates. The six teams could have to compete as “open” cars and would have to qualify by speed each week to enter the race, receiving a fraction of the revenue. Without a license, Hamlin said it would cost teams “tens of millions” to run three cars.That’s just a small part of the whole litigation. I’m not deterred at all. We’re in good shape.

The antitrust case is scheduled to be heard in December. NASCAR has not stated what it would do with the six charters held by the two organizations if they are returned to the sanctioning body. There are 36 chartered cars for a field of 40.We are committed to running this season open if necessary. We are going to compete and fulfill all our commitments no matter what. We are here to compete. Our team will be here for the long term and we are sure of that.
