William Byron Clinches Championship 4 Spot with Martinsville Victory

In an exciting race at Martinsville Speedway, William Byron took the victory, securing a spot in the coveted Championship 4 of the NASCAR Cup Series. Byron, driving the No. 24 Chevrolet, showcased his skill by overtaking Ryan Blaney in turn 1 with 43 laps to go. This strategic move allowed him to take the lead and maintain it until the end of the race. The Hendrick Motorsports driver led an impressive total of 304 of the 500 laps, adding his third win of the season. This victory marks his first in a playoff elimination race and his third at Martinsville.

“Damn, I have a lot to say. Things have a way of working out. God really tests your resilience many times. We have been tested. Just incredible. We work so hard and give it our all on Sundays. Sometimes you get nothing in return. That’s how it’s been in the last few weeks and, honestly, throughout the whole year. But sometimes life is like that. You just have to keep being resilient. We were. It just feels really good”.

In a gesture of sportsmanship, Blaney congratulated Byron in Victory Lane. Kyle Larson, Byron’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, secured the final championship-eligible spot with a fourth-place finish, surpassing Christopher Bell by seven points. The final round of the championship will be held at Phoenix Raceway on November 2nd, where the title will be decided among the remaining four drivers. Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe also faced mechanical issues during the race. Hamlin, who started the third round with a victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, suffered an engine failure on lap 334, relegating him to 35th place. Briscoe, for his part, finished last due to a loss of power in his No. 19 Toyota after 295 laps. Despite this, Briscoe had already secured a place in the Championship 4 thanks to his victory at the Talladega Superspeedway on October 19th.
